SCROLL

THE REALITY

You Know What It's Like...

We don't need to explain this part. You live it. But naming it clearly is where support actually starts.

The calls that follow you home — even when you don't talk about them

The hypervigilance that won't shut off, even on your days off

Watching brothers and sisters burn out, retire early, or worse

The culture that says 'suck it up' when your nervous system is screaming

You drive home after a bad call and your family is at the table — but part of you is still in that house. The smell. The face. The decision you keep replaying. You're trained to handle everything on the job. Nobody trained you for what happens after.

And the culture doesn't help. 'Walk it off.' 'Others have it worse.' 'You signed up for this.' So you do what you're trained to do — you compartmentalize, you push forward, and you bring it home without meaning to.

WellnessForward was built by a 33-year firefighter who knows what it costs to carry this work without the right tools.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Rob Z. Christensen

Rob Z. Christensen is a career firefighter with over 33 years of experience in emergency response, fire service leadership, and performance psychology at the Boise Fire Department.

During his time in the fire service, Rob had the rare privilege of working within a system that invested heavily in mental PPE — peer support programs, performance psychology, and trauma-informed wellness training. He witnessed firsthand how these tools saved careers, relationships, and lives.

But he also recognized a painful truth: most professions that face trauma daily don't have access to these same protections. Disaster cleanup crews. Coroners. Vet techs. Social workers. They show up to the hardest scenes — and then go home alone with no support system.

Wellness Forward was created to change that.

Rob's work has been featured in The New York Times, and his documentary on fire service culture has reached audiences nationwide.
